3 Things to Nail to Grow Your Interior Design Business

The last thing the world needs is another generalist “we do everything” interior design studio.

You need to have absolute clarity on what you do and who you’re here to serve.

We’re all competing in a crowded marketplace. The BIID estimates that there are 20,000 interior designers currently practising – and that’s in the UK alone.

Now I genuinely believe that there’s enough to go around for everyone but if there is nothing to differentiate you then why would a client choose you above any of the other 19,999 interior designers out there?

You need to fully own your uniqueness and market & sell your services in a way that feels authentic whilst showing your ideal client the No1 thing they are asking which is: WHY YOU?

Can you answer that question with confidence?

More importantly, can you articulate it consistently?

Instead of catering to everybody, positioning yourself as one possible choice in MANY, you want to become the ONLY choice for your ideal clients.

That means showing up, powerfully, as the expert that you are.

Cultivating a brand that expresses your values and creative standards – why what you believe and the way you do things is different to others.

Cashflow is the lifeblood of your business so pricing and selling your services correctly is essential.

You need to be charging at a level where you can meet all of your operating expenses, pay yourself a decent amount and put aside a % for profit that can be reinvested back into the business.

But knowing your numbers is only the start of pricing profitably.

Forget the hourly rates or pricing per square foot or any other formulaic approach you can think of – bespoke services call for bespoke pricing.  You want to find that pricing sweet spot between what this transformation is truly worth to your client, what figure would excite (not terrify) you, and what price you can get all your energy behind and sell to your potential client with absolute certainty that it’s a no-brainer for the value you’re going to bring.  Done well, pricing bespoke services is an art, not a science.

This is about stepping into your highest level self.  The version of you that has the life you desire, does the things you dream of doing, and is absolutely fine with saying no if it brings them closer to either of those goals.

It means deciding that this business is going to work.  Not only work, but be fun and successful. Give you the freedom you dreamed of when you first had the idea of working for yourself and hit ‘BUY’ on the domain name purchase.

It’s about saying to yourself (quietly but determinedly) that you are prepared to step out of your comfort zone and take action despite your fear.

That you are prepared to try things – get out there, build relationships, invest in marketing – knowing full well that some will work and some won’t but that you’re going to build the resilience required to ride the journey.

Being in your personal power means truly believing that you get to earn more money, work with brilliant clients and have more freedom in your life. And then take action accordingly.

We’re not born knowing how to do any of this stuff. Learning the strategies you need to grow. Building the muscle of self belief. It’s all work. And it will be harder than you think and take longer than you want.

You need to choose your circle carefully.  Surround yourself with people who lift you higher. People who know how hard it is running a business but are possessed with a can-do mentality and are cheering you on at every step. You need to surround yourself with people who get it.
